Peter McCreedy rocked our world with his stories of children learning with dirt, stone tools and chucking homemade spears. His key note, and workshop, highlighted the amzing work he is doing as directory of ecology at his school in South Michigan.

Jenee and Kai were two of the humans getting radicalized listening to Peter McCreedy on Saturday. Traverse City’s Great Lakes Bioneers has had some seriously committed moms and pops step-up and make the conference truly family friendly. Is everyone getting their baby fix?

Once again, Glenn Wolf’f directed participatory art space is developing well–this year based on the concept of Fairness. The piece will be hung at Higher Grounds Trading Co.

And, it isn’t time to rest yet Jeremy Truog. We won’t get on his case for taking a well deserved nap, but there is still one day left–so get to work! Thank you to all of the volunteers and NMC staff who make this conference run ever so smooth.

Food, Fun and Family

Food and music. I guess that’s our favorite subject.

071019-bioneers.jpg

Here’s some of Gary Howe’s shots of the first day of the Great Lakes Bioneers Conference in Traverse City.  Marty Heller was our first local keynote reminding us that the local food movement is very radical and also very alive in Michigan.

There were more kids than ever running around with the new family friendly space and workshops.

Todd Springer mixes a mess of local greens for our lunches.  We ate them along with corn pone and, yes, some tofu chili.

Sally Neal was first in line for lunch. She is one of the many amaaaaazing Sally’s who work on our conference.

Ten musicians graced our stage Friday evening for the Earthwork Concert.  Make that 13 with three surprise - and somewhat shy - guest stars (not pictured here).  Songs were medicine tonight.  From the ice age to the future and back again; literally.  It’s never too late to take back the future.

Saturday Night Film

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

“It is difficult to believe our story, but if we don’t tell you, you won’t know.”

We are thrilled to have the opportunity to screen WAR/DANCE for our Saturday night film. This documentary tells the story of Dominic, Rose, Nancy and their school in the Patongo Internally Displaced Persons camp as they take an historic journey to compete in Uganda’s national music and dance festival. This powerful and vivid film received the Best Non-Fiction Film award at the 2007 Traverse City Film Festival. It is schedule to hit theaters nationally on November 2, and so this is an opportunity for people in Northern Michigan to once again see this film before its official release.

The film is presented by the Great Lakes Bioneers as part of the annual Great Lakes Bioneers Conference held on the campus of Northwestern Michigan College October 19-21, 2007. Its open to everyone, so even if you can’t make the conference, come join us for a movie.

We will be accepting donations at the event on behalf of the Patongo Scholarship Fund, which is overseen by the co-director of War/Dance, Sean Fine.
